Where to find your people in NYC.

New York is huge. Aggressively so. A city that makes it very easy to feel anonymous while simultaneously feeling socially drained and under-connected all at once. Yet somehow, certain corners of it can feel like a small town… if you know where to look.

These are the communities that are quietly shrinking New York in the best way possible, by uniting like-minded people who already speak the same language. Not the cringe, badge-on-a-lanyard kind, but the ones built around dinner parties, backgammon, entrepreneurship, movement and cold plunging. Yes, cold plunging.

You’re not solely showing up to “meet people.” You’re showing up because you genuinely care about the thing. The connection part happens on autopilot.

Familiar faces mixed with new ones, inside jokes layered on fresh conversations. A rotating cast of people who somehow all feel like your type. Welcome to a version of the city that feels smaller, warmer and still very much New York. Small talk is optional, but we guarantee you won’t need it.

Coffee & Chill

Image

Social / Website

A morning-first, sober-leaning community that turns coffee and wellness into a social sport. Equal parts caffeine, movement and cold plunging, Coffee & Chill brings together people who’d rather meet before noon on a Sunday than scream over a DJ at Brooklyn Mirage. Think group cold plunging to an epic soundtrack and experiential brand activations rooted in wellness and recovery.

Village Backgammon Club

Social / Website

A modern social club centered around a centuries-old board game. Backgammon is having its moment, and VBC built a thriving community around it with just enough competition to spark conversation. You don’t have to be good – you just have to be curious. An appreciation for vibey lounges, a killer cocktail and good company also helps.

CONTRA

Social / Website

The private events RSVP platform that doubles as a members community, for the people who care about *how* things are hosted, not just who’s on the guest list (but that, too). CONTRA sits at the intersection of culture, fashion, media and tech — bringing together brands, tastemakers and hosts who treat events as an art form. Visually literate, intentional and fluent in the unspoken rules of a good room.

Shabbat Club

Social / Website

Friday night dinner, but make it casual, fun and Gen-Z coded. Shabbat Club by @tooomuchfoood reimagines an ancient ritual for young Jewish New Yorkers (and anyone interested) who want community without the formality. Each dinner, holiday and celebration is rooted in the tradition of sharing a meal and an openness to slowing down together, paired with a guest list that is instantly familiar.

Fluent

Social / Website

A community specially designed for young New Yorkers who want to be in the know without trying too hard to prove it. Fluent is a social media-first lifestyle magazine and cultural platform curating everything (and everyone) you need to know to lead and maintain a fluent lifestyle. Through niche, recommendations-driven content and high-intention events that move the internet conversation offline, Fluent is your fast pass to being effortlessly plugged in.

Uncharted

Social / Website

Where serious builders go to get out of the noise and into the rooms that actually matter. Uncharted began as an intimate dinner at serial entrepreneur and founder Michael Loeb’s UES residence and scaled to a highly-curated, members-only powerhouse collective, anchored by an annual 700-person summit at the Loeb Hamptons estate. Deeply relationship-driven, selective and built around the idea that the highest connection comes when founders feel safe enough to be honest.

Mornings in Motion

Social / Website

A girls-only movement club that turns early mornings into a social ritual instead of a solo grind, led by @haleyyblackburn and @catystanko. Mornings in Motion brings together runners, walkers, skiers and movement-first girlies who like their community active, supportive and genuinely welcoming. The format shifts (weekday runs, philanthropic pickleball, ski days), but the mission of high-energy connection stays the same.

City Girls Who Walk

Social / Website

The ultimate low-barrier, high-reward social activity. City Girls Who Walk turns something you were already doing – going for a walk – into one of the easiest ways to make friends in the city. Every Sunday at noon starts with a stroll through the city and has the potential to end with a newly formed GC. The structure is simple (meet, walk, talk), but the impact is anything but. Founded by legendary fitness guru, mom and creator @briannajoye_fitness.

After Hours Club

Social / Website

A creative exhale after hours. After Hours Club is a mindful art and wellness community, blending guided art-making with meditation and reflection. You don’t have to be good at art, and you don’t have to be a conversationalist – you just have to be open to quieting the noise and reconnecting with yourself and others. They say art has a natural soothing effect.

Andrew Yeung’s Tech Events

Social / Website

The rare tech scene that actually feels collaborative. Andrew Yeung’s Tech Events bring together founders, operators, investors and tech-adjacent professionals in settings designed for real conversation — intimate dinners, panels and invite-only gatherings backed by on-brand sponsors. You won’t find pitch decks or awkward icebreakers here, but you will find friends and potential business connections (who then become friends).

Pawn Chess Club

Social / Website

Where strategy meets The Met. Pawn Chess Club brings chess to some of the city’s hottest venues – yes, including The Met – where all levels are welcome. What started as a small gathering in a private room at Casino NYC soon turned into a chess collective popping up at places like La Cabra and 365apartment above Happier Grocery. Come for the chess, stay for the conversation and the vibes.

10 Chairs

Social / Website

Originally a 10-person seated dinner concept conceived in a NYC shoebox apartment. Strangers become regulars in intimate environments designed for friends. Two years ago, two guys moved from Miami and started inviting people over for dinner. Now, they’re taking over Felix and surprise destinations (even tennis courts at country clubs) with their signature people-focused programming where banter flows as freely as the wine.

Soul X

Social / Website

Culture-first, spiritually curious and led by @millennialrabbi. Soul X is where Judaism meets Gen-Z where they’re at in life, whether it’s physically at Surf Lodge or at the Shabbat table. It’s less about doctrine and more about dialogue: reimagined rituals, intimate gatherings and meditation for the soul. And Mita Gami may be at the afters.

Drinks First

Social / Website

An events and soft-matchmaking community centered around original experiences and IRL dating opps. @ariana.nathani built a network blending her dating podcast with curated events that range from wellness-forward mixers and secret pizza parties to Diwali celebrations. It’s dating without the pressure, and proof that connection hits harder when intention comes first.

The Art of Mondays

Social / Website

A members-only ecosystem built for ambitious people across three touchpoints: Sports, Family and Spaces. Designed around alignment over networking, Art of Mondays brings founders together through IRL sports meetups in your city, founder residencies that turn travel into a lifestyle and global spaces that fuel creativity and innovation. The unique matching algorithm pairs founders together based on mutual interests.

Groove Ballet

Social / Website

An NYC-based label and event collective built on one main principle: house music hits harder in unexpected places. Groove Ballet pairs local DJ talent with pop-up takeovers at locations like the back of a U-Haul and the middle of a sushi den. The crowd is tight-knit and the energy is infectious – people show up to genuinely have a blast. If you love house music, dancing like no one’s watching and discovering scenes before they’re obvious, this is your place.

Chosen Gatherings

Social / Website

A passion project for community architect, entrepreneur and brand strategist @tracykomlos. Through thoughtfully curated Shabbat dinners, candlelit house concerts, panels and retreats, Chosen creates dynamic spaces for Jews and allies to celebrate the spirit of tradition in a modern setting. Attendees range anywhere between the ages of 28 and 55, resulting in a room that fosters a sense of belonging across generations.

AthletEX

Social / Website

An outlet for former college and professional athletes to continue doing what they love. Founded by Taylor Cohen (a college and professional soccer player herself), AthletEX is a network of “retired athletes” who seek the same purpose and camaraderie as their teams once provided, but in the real world. AX has since grown into a network of 10,000+ athletes and hosted 100+ events, from monthly captain-led practices (team dinners and social hours) to large quarterly gatherings (game days and galas).
